We all had to start somewhere. These pages help you share my bumpy ride. Maybe it’ll encourage young cartoonists who are just starting out. I should warn you, though, it could get ugly. Look away if it hurts.

Peepal:
My very first published cartoon panel, Peepal, ran weekly in The Burlington Gazette from 1975-76.
This one ran just after the movie, “Jaws” was released. It was one of my first sales.
A few years later I saw the same gag in a National Enquirer, same caption, same set up but with a tiger head over a fireplace.
It made me realize that two cartoonists can and do create very similar gags without knowing it.
It happens. Being very new at the game, I felt flattered that a gag I dreamt up could sell to a national paper.
“I keep it for sentimental reasons… it ate my wife!”
The name “Peepal” was just another way of spelling people.
This one shows neighbours shoveling their walks into each others drive. An gag I got from having it happen to me.
