Rob Austin

Here is a caricature of Rob Austin, who was Editor of The Hamilton Spectator. It’s a card I drew when he left the paper.

Rob loved newspapers, and threw himself into the pages with a passion that rubbed off on everyone around him, like ink off newsprint.

Rob was features editor back in 1978, and bought  Pokus. He liked it and fought for it.

Rob hired me at The Burlington Spectator in 1986, where he was Editor.

We worked closely on a number of newspaper redesigns in the mid 90’s.

I’ve never worked with a more demanding – talented and inspired person. You just wanted to do your best when working with Rob.

Rob liked Cornered and decided to buy it. Without his encouragement and support, Cornered might not have happened.

Rob passed away July 2002 in his 58th year.

At his memorial service it was standing-room only as hundreds crowded in to say goodbye – and thank you.

In a perfect world, everyone would have a Rob Austin in their corner.

Thanks for everything, Rob. I miss you.
